A minute later, security was at her door, and Valente charged into the room. She pointed to the ventilation shaft, but knew it was too late. Barnes was already gone.

“He’s used the ventilation shaft to get into my room, but that doesn’t explain how he’s disabling my voice commands.” Dana snatched a uniform from the closet and held it over her arm. “I want to know how he’s able to render my codes useless no matter what I do.”

Valente sent two guards to follow the ventilation shaft, just in case, then turned to her. “I’ll reset your passkey in the meantime. We’ll figure it out, Captain.”

She left Valente and his guards out in the main area of her cabin while she went to change in the bathroom. Inside, she stared at her reflection, at the bags under her eyes from two nights of interrupted sleep. She stripped out of her gown and put on her uniform. Her hands still shook as she fastened the jacket around her. She huffed in frustration.

“Get it together, Pinet.”

She had three anti-anxiety nanodots left, but she wouldn’t touch them again. They hadn’t done anything but delay the inevitable. It didn’t remove the reasons behind the anxiety, only the symptoms. Dana preferred Rido’s method for dealing with it, though it required more time and wasn’t available in nanodot form. She was also pretty sure that he wanted more from her than he was saying.

When she came out of her room, Wade was there with the others. He rushed over to her.

“What happened?”

Dana shrugged and ignored the fact that it was the most he’d spoken to her since they’d both been rid of the infection. “Barnes decided to pay me a midnight visit.”

“Did he threaten you?”

“Actually, no. Other than coming in here while I was in my nightgown, he just wanted to talk.”

His brow furrowed. “Talk?”

“He wants off the ship.”

“Of course he does. So he came to your cabin to catch you unaware with your guard down just to tell you what you already knew?”

Dana shrugged. “He wanted me to drop him off at the nearest habitable planet, regardless of alien or plant life.”

“What did you say?”

“I told him that if he wanted off the ship when we arrived at the Nexus, he’d have to tell me who the other Coalition member is.”

“Other Coalition member?”

She nodded, crossing her arms over her chest. “It seems there’s at least one more. I want their name.”

Wade took a step back in surprise. “Are you sure you can trust him?”

“No,” Dana said with another one-shoulder shrug. “I wouldn’t trust him to pick up my laundry. But regardless of that fact, he knows who the person is, and he’s agreed to tell me once he’s gotten free passage off of the ship and onto the space station.”

Wade ran a hand through his hair. “But we can’t believe a word he’d say.”

“Perhaps not, but he helped Eartha, Luke, and Ari when the rest of us were under the influence of the pathogen. He could’ve left us all to die.
